The term “Autism Spectrum Disorders” comprises a number of developmental disabilities, all of which are characterized by impairments in socialization and communicative development. Students in this course will learn about the identification and treatment of Autism, as well as educational methods. Students will learn specific interventions for educating children throughout their lifespan, including behavior modification, early intervention techniques, supporting language and communication development, modifying curriculum and preparing students for community integration and employment. Coursework will emphasize the development of functional and practical lessons that can be used in the student’s current curriculum.
Course Objectives
As a result of this participation in this course, students should:
- Understand and describe the characteristics of autism.
- Create appropriate interventions in the areas of communication, socialization and behavior.
- Facilitate parent and school partnerships for students with ASD.
- Develop appropriate lesson plans and classroom accommodations.
- Learn how to use augmentative and assistive technology to learn social skills.
- Prepare students to successfully transition to middle school, high school and adulthood.
